Morning Session

Fire & EMS Digital Imagery and Social Media Challenges

A firefighter takes a video with his cellphone at an emergency scene, forwards it to a buddy who is off-duty, and before the companies return to quarters, the video has gone viral on the internet. Sound far fetched? If you have been watching the headlines, you’ll notice that the world is changing… QUICKLY. As a result fire departments policies are playing catch up with technology and new fads. Learn how to avoid digital media traps and develop sound and defensible social media polices while still having access to needed fireground photography for training purposes. Real-life cases from the past three years are analyzed from the perspective of consequences to firefighters and departments arising from posting photos and videos on the Internet.

Social media has been both a blessing and a curse for the fire service, but one thing is undeniable: social media with all its problems is here to stay. The law that applies to social media has been evolving and continues to evolve, with new cases and considerations arising daily. This program will focus on the latest social media cases affecting the fire service, and the lessons learned for fire departments and firefighters. Stay current on this evolving problem and learn what new concerns your policies need to address.
