WALPOLE FIRE DEPARTMENT'S CAPTAIN HURLBURT PASSES AWAY

The Walpole Fire & Ems Department announce the passing of George "Herb" Hurlburt,a 47 year member of the department after a Battle with ALS. Herb joined Walpole Fire in 1969,working his way through the ranks to Chief Officer,Fire Commissioner and decorated member. He proudly served on the Board of Directors at South Western NH Fire Mutual Aid and was an instrumental part in incorporation of EMS into the Walpole Fire Department.Calling hours will be held Friday,November 11th from 1700-2000hrs at Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home,55 Westminster St. in Bellows Falls. A casual celebration of Herb's life will be held on Saturday November 12th at 1400hrs at the Walpole Fire Station, 287 Main ST. Walpole.

RETIRED BRATTLEBORO FIRE CHIEF T. HOWARD MATTISON PASSES AWAY

The Brattleboro Fire Department is announcing the sad news of the passing of T. Howard Mattison, former Fire Chief for the Town of Brattleboro. Chief Mattison, the former Road Foreman and Fire Chief in Bennington, VT, was hired as the Fire Chief in Brattleboro in March of 1959 by then Town Manager George Miller. Chief Mattison brought new life and enthusiasm into the Brattleboro Fire Department, making it one of the finest in the state. He was known for his “no nonsense approach” and his command presence at an emergency was 2nd to none. Chief Mattison retired on March 31, 1989 after 30 years of dedicated service to the Town of Brattleboro. RIP Chief Mattison, you will be missed.

Arrangements have been completed for services for Chief Mattison;

· Calling hours will be Friday evening at Atamaniuk Funeral Home, 40 Terrace Street, Brattleboro from 1700-1900. · Funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10:00 at the First Universalist Church of West Chesterfield, 10 Main Street, West Chesterfield. Burial is immediately following at the cemetery on Poor Rd, just up the street from the church.

FIRE MUTUAL AID FULL TIME RADIO TECHNICIAN POSITION

October 27, 2016 Southwestern New Hampshire District Fire Mutual Aid System is looking to fill the position of full-time radio technician. We offer a competitive salary and benefits package. Job duties:

Installs, tests, repairs, and maintains base, mobile, and portable two-way radios and accessory equipment. Installs and maintains electronic surveillance and security systems. Installs, repairs and maintains microwave radio and multiplex equipment, both analog and digital, and point to point communications systems. Installs and maintains public address systems, radar equipment, earphone systems, intercom systems, electronic sirens, emergency warning lights, telephone systems, cellular phones, computers, and other equipment and systems. May operate and maintain mobile electronic service shop truck or other service vehicle. Modifies existing equipment to meet present needs. Assists in the planning and designing of new installations, systems, and equipment. Checks frequencies and solves interference problems. Provides technical expertise in the consideration of equipment and system needs and concerns. Repairs and maintains test equipment. Periodically checks reliability of equipment. Attends training and reads publications to remain current in electronic technology. Provides assistance to co-workers in specific situations. Maintains logs and prepares reports. Maintains inventory of equipment and parts. Performs related work as assigned The job duties require an employee to move heavy objects.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in the field and in an office or shop, and may require frequent travel as well as the transport of heavy equipment and exposure to high voltage power sources. Some jobs require an employee to work on high structures. Must be willing to climb to heights in excess of 100 feet Some jobs require an employee to be exposed to inclement weather conditions. Some jobs require an employee to be exposed to hazardous work environments. Some jobs require an employee to work where there is a significant chance of injury.

Knowledge of closed circuit surveillance, monitoring, and security systems and equipment. Knowledge of two-way radio equipment, components and systems. Knowledge of earphone, telephone, and cellular telephone systems and equipment. Knowledge of the principles of microwave radio and multiplex communications systems. Knowledge of solid state electronics, the operational design of circuits, and electronic testing equipment. Knowledge of digital technology. Knowledge of state and federaltwo-way radio regulations. Knowledge of safety procedures, techniques and equipment. Knowledge of the common causes of failure that occur in radio transmitting and receiving equipment. Knowledge of the principles of antenna design and construction. Knowledge of current developments in the field of communications. Ability to remove and install two-way radios, sirens, radar units,telephones, and other equipment. Ability to use computers and Microsoft office suite Ability to read and use schematic diagrams. Ability to apply rules and guidelines to specific situations. Ability to interconnect electronic components into a functional system. Attendance at every class meeting is mandatory for successful completion of this course.

This program is designed to qualify fire service responders to deliver instruction from a prepared lesson plan. Upon successful completion, students are awarded nationally registered certifications in accordance with NFPA 1041, Fire Service Instructor Professional Qualifications, 2012 edition.

Prerequisites: - Currently active in the Fire Service with a minimum of three years experience - High school diploma or equivalent - Current Firefighter I or II certification

To register, download the General Admission Application, fill it out and return it to the Vermont Fire Academy by the registration deadline. Priority will go to Vermont Firefighters. The class maximum is 12 students.

Please note students will need a laptop/computer access for homework assignments.

Fire Instructor I certification is prerequisite for Fire Officer certification and required for employment as a Vermont Fire Academy Instructor.

NEW COURSE! Photovoltaic Safety for Firefighters

The Vermont Fire Academy is proud to release a new course titled Photovoltaic Safety for Firefighters. Register for any venue by submitting a General Admission Application to the Vermont Fire Academy two weeks prior to the course delivery date.

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems are becoming more common on homes and businesses across Vermont. Building mounted PV systems present special considerations for firefighters when handling emergencies within these buildings and around these systems. This course will provide the participants with information about what firefighters need to know to safely deal with fires in buildings equipped with PV systems and other emergencies that occur around ground mounted PV equipment.

Topics include an introduction to photovoltaics and electrical theory, recognition of PV systems and components, general PV system operation, common safety labeling, tactical considerations, disconnecting means, fire suppression and ventilation issues, and the hazards associated with fire service operations in the area of a PV system.

All applications are due two weeks prior to the scheduled class date.
