More details on the seminars will be posted soon!About Dr. Harry Carter: Dr. Harry R. Carter, FIFireE, CFO, is a veteran chief fire officer, an internationally-known municipal fire protection consultant, author, writer, and lecturer. He currently serves as a fire commissioner and is Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners for Fire District #2 in Howell Township, New Jersey. Dr. Carter has also served on the adjunct faculty of a number of community colleges in New Jersey, as well as the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. He formerly served on the faculty of the School of Public Safety Leadership at Capella University in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

He retired in 1999 as a Suppression Division Battalion Commander with the Newark Fire Department in New Jersey. During his tenure in Newark, he served as Chief of Training, Commander of the Hazardous Materials Response Team, and Administrative Assistant to the Fire Chief. He is also a past Fire Chief and former Training Officer of the Adelphia Fire Company, located in the Adelphia section of Howell Township, New Jersey. He currently serves as the fire company Chaplain. He also serves as Chaplain for the East Freehold Fire Company in Freehold Township, New Jersey.

Dr. Carter is a Fellow of the United States of America Branch of the Institution of Fire Engineers, Great Britain (FIFireE). He is currently serving as Immediate Past President for the branch. He is a Life Member and former President of the International Society of Fire Service Instructors and is also a former President of the New Jersey Association of Fire Districts and the New Jersey Society of Fire Service Instructors. He is a Life Member of the National Fire Protection Association.

He has been a contributing editor for Firehouse Magazine since 1990, and has been a long-time participant at their Firehouse EXPO in Baltimore, Maryland. His weekly commentary appears on the front page of Firehouse.Com where he is their senior correspondent. He also serves as a contributing editor for the Pennsylvania Fireman.

He has been a frequent contributor to Fire Chief and Fire Engineering magazines. For many more than 15 years he wrote a monthly column for The Voice, the membership magazine of ISFSI. A frequent lecturer at seminars in the United States and Canada, Dr. Carter has appeared at the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) since 1979. He has lectured in twenty-six of the United States and in three Canadian Provinces. He is an honorary Citizen of the Province of Nova Scotia.

He has authored or co-authored fourteen textbooks and written more than 2,500 articles for all of the major fire service trade journals and websites, as well as peer-reviewed journals. He has also been published in the New York Times, and the Asbury Park Press.

ASSISTANT CHIEF LYNCH LEAVING BRATTLEBORO FD

BRATTLEBORO >> Assistant Fire Chief Peter Lynch is leaving the Brattleboro Fire Department to take a job with the state. Lynch, a resident of Dummerston and a member of the department for the past 34 years — nine as the assistant fire chief — was taking the job as the state's chief of fire service training for the Vermont Division of Fire Safety in the Department of Public Service. His last day in Brattleboro will be Aug. 26 and he starts with the state on Sept. 4.

"Peter began his fire service career as a volunteer with the Dummerston and Brattleboro Fire Departments," said Chief Michael Bucossi. "I want to thank him for dedicated service to this community and wish him well this new challenge that is sure to help firefighters throughout the state and the area."

Lynch has been a long-time member of the Vermont Fire Service Training Council Curriculum Committee and a part-time instructor.

"I am really looking forward to my new job and I am grateful to everyone in the town of Brattleboro for helping me get to this point," said Lynch.

During Thursday's Select Board meeting, Chairman David Gartenstein commended Lynch's work on the fire facility upgrade project and his work following the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn.

"Pete led the development of the school crisis emergency response plan and showed significant leadership within the town and the region coordinating with other departments, public safety agencies and the school district," said Gartenstein. "The emergency response plan has really been a model, not just here in Brattleboro but also across the state."

Town Manager Peter Elwell noted that Lynch will not be moving and he will still be seen around town, working with local fire departments.

"Peter is a really class act," added board member Dick DeGray. "You've been a real asset to the community and to the Brattleboro municipal family. We wish you the best."

Lynch has also been the town's health officer for several years. The town is in the process of finding a replacement.

OBITUARY AND ARRANGEMENTS FOR PETERBOROUGH FIREFIGHTER JIM GRANT

Charles James "JIM" Grant The town of Peterborough has lost its biggest cheerleader.

On July 26, 2016, Jim Grant, educator, father, grandfather, husband, and humanitarian lost his 5- month battle against mesothelioma, an incurable disease caused by a simple asbestos fiber he inhaled sometime in the past 50 years.

Jim was born in Peterborough on January 26, 1942, son of Marjorie (Dolan) Grant and Bertrice H. Grant. He leaves his wife of 52 years, Lillian (Bull) Grant, son Nathan H. Grant of Peterborough, Caleb A. Grant and wife Annelise of Newburyport, Mass. Beloved grandchildren are Cooper and Bowden Grant and Alaina Marie Morano-Grant of Connecticut. Jean (Grant) Bergeron of Jaffrey is his surviving sibling.He is also survived by his mother-in-law Avis Bull formerly of Stoddard. He adored his nieces and nephews and their children. He loved his cat Freddy also.

He is predeceased by his brother John Grant and infant granddaughter Laura Louise Morano-Grant.

Jim graduated from Peterborough High School and Keene State College with a B.Ed; he furthered his education at Antioch with his M.Ed. He was bestowed an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Franklin Pierce College in Rindge.

To describe Jim’s life would take an entire book, but let it be said that Jim will not be forgotten by the hundreds of people he has touched in so many ways. From his early years as an Eagle Scout till about 2 weeks before he died, he gave of himself to whoever needed help. One of his favorite sayings was “don’t forget where you came from” and always help those who need help, no matter who they are.

He loved Peterborough. His license plate read LUVPBRO. He loved the history, the people, riding around and reminiscing about what was. But he also was a innovator for new and different things to make Peterborough an even better town. He was not opposed to change.

Some of his achievements include starting the Monadnock Worksource in the middle l960s, being an active Peterborough fireman for over 50 years, serving as a chairman of the Salvation Army Unit for Our Town, starting The Sunshine Fund to help local folks with gas cards, food, rides, auto repairs, college books, whatever was needed to happen to help those in need.

Some of the Honors bestowed on him include: Paul Harris Fellow, Monadnock Region Citizen of the Year, St. Florian Fire Fighter of the Year, Keene State College Alumni Achievement Award, Business Leader of the Year, Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year, and in May 2016, The Governor Walter Peterson Medal.

Jim’s first job was teaching in Dublin at the elementary school. At the end of the first year, he was promoted to Principal AND 5/6 teacher in Temple School. There he flourished as an advocate for children to succeed no matter what! School readiness was his biggest topic and he published his first book I HATE SCHOOL. Since then he has written or co-written over 30 books, his latest just being released on GRIT.

Jim and Lil started a small conference/seminar business in their home called Jim Grant Associates in l985. On some days there were 12 to 15 people working there. The joke was if the building inspector stopped, everyone grab a mop or broom and start to clean! When JGA grew too rapidly to stay in their home, the company moved to the plaza in North Peterborough, and the name changed to Society for Developmental Education. This company also grew rapidly and it was again moved to South Peterborough as Staff Development for Educators, which at one time employed over 150 persons. Jim worked constantly on new and innovative ideas for promoting school success. He and Lillian traveled to every state in the US and many countries abroad spreading the message: STOP SCHOOL FAILURE. One of the conferences held yearly draws over 6,500 teachers and educators from all over the country and world. It was held last week in Las Vegas with 6,200 in attendance. That was the first one Jim ever missed.

Jim lived a very full life and was at peace with death. He always said what a ride, and it’s now over for me. I’m ready.

Jim will be remembered at calling hours on August 5 from 3 to 8 pm at Jellison Funeral Home in Peterborough. A Memorial service will be held August 6 at 11 am at the Unitarian Church on Main Street in Peterborough.
