On Friday December 4th at 1436 hrs Springfield Fire and Ambulance was dispatched to Linhale Drive off the Chester Road for a reported structure fire with serious injury. Upon arrival of the first engine company heavy smoke and flames were showing from a 3 story 100'x75' former dairy barn. The ambulance crew found a male subject with 3rd degree burns over 60% of his body. He was transported to Springfield Hospital and then transfered by helicopter to a burn center in Boston, MA.This fire was upgraded twice to a 3rd alarm assignment due to the rural location, size of the involved structure, and 3 exposures 2 of which were occupied residences. We also had up to 1 dozen field/brush fires going that were caused from the high heat and flying embers. These fires were found to be up to 1/2 mile away from the scene. Units on scene were from Springfield, Chester and Charlestown Fire, and a special request for brush units from Ascutney and Charlestown Fire. Cover assignments were brought in from Bellows Falls and Claremont and ambulance coverage from LeFevre Ambulance.
