Keene House Damaged by Fire

Keene Fire Department was dispatched on a First Alarm at 0258 hours to a reported garage fire at 1157 Roxbury Road in Keene.

Engine 1, Ladder 1, Ladder 2, Car 3 and Car 2 responded. Dispatch reported to Car 3 while responding that they were taking multiple calls on the fire and that Keene Police units were on scene reporting a garage heavily involved in fire with extension into the residence. Car 3- Lt. Cram requested a 2nd. Alarm based on the reports from the scene.

Car 3 and Engine 1 were first to arrive on scene. Car 3 confirmed the earlier reports of the fire and established command. KPD units on scene reported to them that the two occupants were out of the residence and safe. Crews from Engine 1, Ladder 1 and Ladder 2 were assigned to attack the heavily involved garage to knock down the major fire while additional crews deployed attack lines into the front of the residence to stop the fire that had already extended into the one story home.

Units assigned on the 2nd. Alarm, Car 1, Rescue 1, Engine 2, Ambulance 3, Marlborough Engine and Brattleboro Engine all provided assistance as needed.

Primary and secondary searches were conducted by crews to confirm there was no one in the residence. Fire crews did a great job in containing and extinguishing the heavy fire that had extended into the residence from the garage.

The fire was declared under control at 0338 hours. The garage was destroyed by the fire with the residence suffering heavy fire and structural damage to approximately one third of the building. The remaining two thirds of the residence suffered major heat, smoke and water damage.

There were no injuries reported, one occupant was checked out at the scene however refused transport. The home is owned by James Phillips of Keene.

The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation by the Keene Fire Department Investigation Team at the time of this release.

Keene Police and the Red Cross assisted on scene

Mutual Aid units from Swanzey, Spofford, Walpole and Peterborough provided coverage to the two Keene Stations during the fire.

Keene Fire units also remain on scene as of 0700 hours.
